We Are People on a Journey

We are people on a journey, following where the Master walks.
We are people on a journey in the shadow of the cross.
What compels? The face of Jesus!
Who protects? Our faithful guide:
He who treads the road of service, Christ the Lord, the crucified.

We are people on a journey, taking up the cross of Christ.
We are people on a journey, moving on from death to life.
We release the sin that tangles, we relinquish all acclaim.
We receive the suffering Savior, he our glory, wealth, and fame.

We are people on a journey to the table of the Lord.
We are people on a journey, fed by water and the Word.
We remember, we remember, how you wash disciples’ feet;
We remember on the last night gifts of wine and bread to eat.

We are people on a journey, rising up in life reborn.
We are people on a journey, speaking peace, accepting scorn.
We are walking toward a homeland, to a mystery yet unknown;
to a kingdom coming quickly, to the light of God’s own throne.

Reflection Questions

Stanza 1
1. Read Ephesians 2:1-3 and Matthew 6:19-24.
In which areas of your life are you following where Jesus has walked, and in which areas have you chosen to walk on your own, and “followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts”?

How would you describe your journey with Jesus ten years ago, five years ago, the past year, and now?

Stanza 2
2. What are some sins in your life you have to release? (Hebrews 12:1-3).

3. What/who is your “glory, wealth, and fame”?

4. What are some “acclaims,” accomplishments, past successes etc. in your life you need to relinquish in order to better tread “the road of service”?

Stanza 3
5. What does “the table of the Lord” remind you of or mean to you? What is on the table and its significance? Read Matthew 26:26-29. Spend some time giving thanks to God for his “gifts of wine and bread to eat.”

6. Have you let anyone washed your feet before? How did you feel? Read John 13:1-17. Imagine Jesus washing your feet. How do you feel?

7. Have you washed anyone’s feet before, either literally or metaphorically? Spend some quiet before the Lord, asking him to bring to mind someone or a group of people he would like you to serve.

Stanza 4
8. “Rising up in life reborn” – How have your life been changed since knowing Jesus? (John 3:3-8; 1 Peter 2:3-9) In what ways are you putting on the new self and throwing away the old? (2 Corinthians 5:14-21; 1 Peter 1:13 – 2:1; 2:11-25; 3:8-18)

9. “Speaking peace, accepting scorn” – Read Psalm 69:19-21, Matthew 5:9, James 3:17-18, Hebrews 12:1-3, Ephesians 4:2-3, Philippians 2:5-8. What is the Lord saying to you?

10. “We are walking toward a homeland, . . . , to a kingdom coming quickly” – Read John 18:36, Colossians 1:9-14, Matthew 6:19-24, and Colossians 3:1-4. Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Where is your homeland? Are you walking towards towards the “kingdom of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) or towards “the kingdom of Christ and of God” (Ephesians 5:5)?

  2. Indeed the session has encouraged me to a timely conviction of my walk with the Lord to be taken more seriously and awareness of my need to see the Holy Spirit’s guidance in my life.
